Cannabis Detoxification
Dual diagnosis is most often thought of as mental illness combined with a substance abuse disorder. Programs for those with substance abuse and mental illness are common. But other types of problems can complicate mental illness as well. Those with intellectual developmental delay face special problems due to their lack of social integration and confounding behaviors, such as hand flapping.
Substance Abuse and Mental Illness
The traditional definition of "dual diagnosis" is when a person is diagnosed with both a substance abuse disorder and a mental illness. Substance abuse may involve a single substance, such as alcohol or cannabis or involve the use of multiple substances and is then termed "poly-substance abuse." Often mentally ill people are said to be "self-medicating' if substances are used to avoid mental pain. According to Mental Health America, the Journal of the American Medial Association has estimated that "(t)hirty-seven percent of alcohol abusers and fifty-three percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness."
The National Institute of Health notes depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and personality disorders often coexist alongside substance abuse disorders. Those with anti-social personality disorders are the most likely to have a substance abuse disorder according to the Mental Health America website.
